The Shyrah or Shiraz grape variety's origin lies in mount Hermitage (in the French Rhone wine country) from where it was taken to Australia in 1832 by James Busby, a Scottish winemaker who is considered the father of Australian viticulture. The perfect match between this grape variety and the Australian climate have made it one of the key determinants in the quality of the wines made there.
Initially Shyrah was used blended with various types of red wine to enhance their structure and complexity; however, the Shyrah grape soon began to be used by itself, producing tannic, well-structured, fine, elegant, complex wines.
Today it is still very much in fashion; time will tell whether it will go on to become a classic or whether it will eventually disappear, as has happened with many grape varieties over the centuries.
The Faustino Group, through Bodegas Leganza, wishes to show its respect for this grape variety by using it for small batches of wine. The result are wines with medium colour intensity, well-structured and pleasant to drink, with smoky notes and hints of blackberries and violets. Wood ageing contributes a touch of vanilla while its complexity disperses its fruitiness in an ample gamut of sensations.
